Snap Establishes Specs Inc. Subsidiary to Accelerate AR Glasses Strategy, CNBC Reports
Snap has formally reorganized the team behind its augmented reality glasses into a newly created, wholly owned subsidiary called Specs Inc., a move the company says will sharpen its execution as it prepares to bring its next-generation AR eyewear to market.
According to a report by CNBC, the Snapchat parent announced that the unit developing its augmented reality glasses will now operate under Specs Inc., a structure designed to provide what the company described as “greater operational focus and alignment.” Snap is preparing to launch its Specs AR glasses later this year.
The company added that the subsidiary framework is intended to strengthen its ability to secure new partnerships while introducing “capital flexibility,” including the potential to accept minority investment. The change reflects a broader strategic adjustment as Snap positions its wearable technology ambitions within an increasingly competitive landscape.
Snap did not disclose how many employees will transfer into the new entity. However, the company confirmed that Specs is currently hiring for nearly 100 roles, signaling a significant build-out of resources around its AR initiative.
Executives had previously previewed this direction. In November, Snap informed analysts that it was considering the formation of a subsidiary structure dedicated to its glasses business. The formal establishment of Specs Inc. now makes that plan official.
Earlier disclosures indicate that Snap is preparing the sixth generation of its glasses for release in 2026. While the company has not specified an exact retail launch date or pricing, it has said the upcoming models will be smaller and lighter than previous versions and are being developed with consumers in mind.
The restructuring comes at a time when major technology players are intensifying efforts in AI-enabled eyewear. Meta and Alphabet are both investing heavily in glasses equipped with artificial intelligence capabilities, escalating competition in the emerging wearable computing category.
Meta, in partnership with eyewear giant EssilorLuxottica, introduced the latest version of its smart glasses in September. Those devices include a small built-in display and carry a $799 price tag. Meanwhile, Google has announced plans to release glasses in collaboration with Warby Parker sometime this year.
The broader context underscores shifting priorities across the sector. CNBC recently reported that Meta laid off more than 1,000 employees within its Reality Labs division, which focuses on virtual reality technology, as the company pivots toward artificial intelligence and wearable devices. The job cuts fueled concerns among developers about the possibility of a “VR winter,” highlighting the volatility surrounding immersive hardware bets.
Against that backdrop, Snap’s decision to isolate its AR glasses operations into Specs Inc. suggests a deliberate attempt to insulate and streamline development while preserving financial flexibility. By creating a subsidiary, Snap may be positioning the unit for strategic partnerships or outside capital without diluting control at the parent company level.
As competition intensifies among Meta, Alphabet and other players pursuing AI-powered eyewear, Snap’s structural shift signals that it sees augmented reality glasses not as an experimental side project, but as a central pillar of its future hardware ambitions.
